The Australian mental health agenda is rapidly changing, with a strong focus on youth mental health issues. There are currently a number of national programs focusing on youth mental health, including the expansion of Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care Initiative (BOiMHCI) to provide youth Access to Applied Psychological Services (ATAPS) and headspace: the National Youth Mental Health Foundation. To support these programs, it is vital that GPs have access to youth mental health training. Despite these initiatives and GP demand, there continues to be a lack of focused youth mental health professional education for general practitioners, allied health professionals and other primary care workers.

beyond blue: the national depression initiative and the Australian General Practice Network have formed a partnership to develop the Young Minds training program. The package is aimed at GPs, practice staff and allied health professionals and other primary care workers with an interest in youth mental health prevention and early intervention.

Training under Young Minds is available as a face to face program and as an online skills program focusing on the identification and skills development in the diagnosis, management and treatment of high prevalence mental health disorders commonly occurring in young people between 12 and 24 years including:

  • Clinical information and practice guidelines on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and management of common mental health problems experienced by young people;
  • Outcome measures commonly used in the diagnosis of these disorders;
  • Treatment guidelines and fact sheets for primary care professionals;
  • Information about how to develop a 'youth friendly' practice;
  • Resources and support material to support patient psycho-education.

The course is accredited by the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) as a Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) program.

Completion of a MHST course and a Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) Skills Training course enables a GP to register as a provider of FPS.

The Young Minds training package is made available free of charge for primary care professionals and accredited/approved/endorsed by:

  • General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration.
  • the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners as an Active Learning
  • Module, Category 1 Activity; completion earns 40 CPD Points.
  • the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine: completion earns 6 ACRRM PDP.
  • the Australian Association of Social Workers: 2 points per learning hour.
  • the Royal College of Nursing Australia: attracting 6 Continuing Nurse Education points.
